The excitement builds...

Yes, yes, it's been a while (again). I have a feeling it won't be the last time we say that... Still, I have decided to channel my enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup (football/soccer, whatever you want to call it) into this blog. For those of you on the other side of the pond, you may wonder what all the fuss is about. In fact, you probably aren't aware of any fuss. Here it is a different story...

For those who hate football, June/July every four years is a very depressing time. But they have the other 3 years, 11 months to be happy, so hey - they'll get over it. What is so good about the World Cup anyway, I hear you ask?! Well, firstly, it really is the World Cup. Over the past 2/3 years, over 150 countries around the world have been battling it out for the chance to play in the World Cup. Now it's down to 32, and the real fun begins. Teams from Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, North America, Oceania... everywhere. The fun of watching the minnows take on the big guns, the skills and quality from all over the world... nothing really comes close. The Olympics isn't a patch on the World Cup.

Over here right now, the media is going beserk about the World Cup, specifically the chances of our currently injured star player - Wayne Rooney (whose nickname is apparently 'Wazza') - recovering in time to play a part in the tournament.

Every match is broadcast on TV - at times there are 3 games on every day! Oh, the brilliance! The whole thing starts on June 9th... England play Paraguay on June 10th. (And for those of you supporting the U.S.A, your first game is on June 12th, against the Czech Republic.)

I will be reporting with interesting and bizarre snippets of information in the coming weeks and throughout the tournament.

  • hey pete,
so i guess you're looking forward to the world cup! i'm sure you can come round and watch it some time.
    love Rach
